THE ICON OF CASABLANCA’S COAST

The El Hank lighthouse stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks on Casablanca’s coastline. Beyond its functionnal role in maritime navigation, it has become a powerful symbol of the city’s identity.

A port in need of light

Before the construction of the lighthouse, access to the port of Casablanca was considered extremely dangerous. Ships arriving along the coast frequently faced difficult navigation conditions, and numerous accidents occurred in the surrounding waters. Several vessels even sank near the coastline, highlighting the urgent need for a guiding structure. The lighthouse was therefore conceived as a response to a critical maritime challenge, ensuring safer access to one of Morocco’s most important ports.

Construction and architectural features

The lighthouse was built between 1916 and 1919, and officially began operating in 1920. It was designed by the architect Albert Laprade, a key figure in early 20th-century architecture in Morocco.
The structure rises to a height of 51 meters, with a base diameter of 39 meters. Inside, a spiral staircase of 256 steps, made of white marble, leads to the top. The lighthouse is constructed using finely cut stone masonry, reflecting both durability and craftsmanship. Its solid and monumental form reinforces its importance as a navigational structure while also giving it a strong architectural presence on the coastline.

A hybrid architectural identity

What makes this lighthouse particularly remarkable is its hybrid architectural language. It combines the classical form of Atlantic coastal lighthouses with a strong Islamic architectural influence.
This blending of styles creates a monument that reflects the architectural complexity of Casablanca. It stands as an example of how architecture can merge function with symbolic and cultural expression.

While Casablanca’s coastline has been repeatedly reshaped by a century of urban growth, the lighthouse remains firmly in place. An iconic landmark whose enduring presence has outlasted every transformation around it.
